Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly across the Atlantic in a Fokker F7 named Friendship, touched down just outside Burry Port Harbour on 18 June 1928. The pilot thought that they were in Ireland.

The Cefn Sidan Sands (English translation: "Silken Back") has been the site of many shipwrecks. Adeline Coqueline, niece to the Consort of Napoleon, Josephine, was travelling aboard La Jeune Emma with her father, when the ship came to grief here in 1828. Both sadly perished and are buried at St Illtyd's Church in Pembrey. In fact, from 1753 to 1996, 14 ships of note came to a tragic end on this stretch of water, carrying cargoes of brandy, rum, sugar and most latterly, an unnamed vessel from Morocco met her demise and was found to be carrying £800,000 of cannabis resin (1996 value).

Pembrey had strategic military connections during the Second World War and an RAF station. Amongst the airmen who were stationed there were Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC DSO and Bar DFC and Bar who led the Dambuster Raid and Ian Douglas Smith who later became Prime Minister of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) from 11 November 1965 to 1 June 1979.
